A pin-pointer is a metal detector you can build the one from Silverdog just do a search for Surf PI if you don't find it let us know

Try this one. I haven't built it but the author claims it's a humdinger.

You're welcome JJ. I can't go there often. I get SOOOOOO distracted on his site. I can wander around there for hours.

Hi Gd,
I built this one (on breadbord).
It's o.k. but like all these designs using 2 coils its more sensitive "side on" rather than at the tip....... which isn't really what you want.
Much prefer the "P.I." approach using a single coil which seems to "focus" better.
If you go with Silverdogs surf p.i. you've got the best of both worlds.
Hell, you dont even need to wind a pinpointer coil.
If you get a ferrite with an A.M. coil already on there the inductance of the coil is as close as makes no difference.
When I get a chance I'll do a step by step with photo's for everyone and post it.

Ferrite antennas generally have two coils which are different. Do you use both?

Hi GD,
No, for the P.I. just use the A.M. section, the inductance is pretty damn close to use on the surf p.i.
It's 370uh (you could take some windings off I guess.... but I didn't bother).
The ferrite I used did, indeed come with 2 coils A.M. and longwave... just discard the longwave coil (it's 4mh).
Here's a link that'll likely make things clearer...

If you want one (although it's showing out of stock our local store have a couple) I can get one and post it for you..... let me know.

I'll give that a miss because I already have a 350uh ferrite core coil that will do the job. Thanks anyway.
