hey folks were do you see the technology heading with detectors ? are there any break through's on the horizon that will change what we use ? you folks know more of the technical side heck i just barely get how what we have now works but thought it would be neat to have a idea were our hobby  may be heading. or if we have peaked where we are for a while as far as the hobby goes i know you can find machines with about any feature money can buy and that's fine but what about just the basic tech will it change soon ?  share your input on this  makes for good discussion   thanks  ;)josey

Josey. As far as the VLF is concerned in 1990 the detector with the most functions in being able to tune the machine
that the user was able to change almost everything and had the hardist learning curve of anything I know of,
And that makes all others look like K Mart specials

Josey,

I see detectors already using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) in a limited sense to analyze targets faster than anything ever done before now. Processors with 800Mhz+ clock speeds with fully programmable functions for every feature are on the horizon. Active coils are already being made - that's a coil with a circuit inside of it that allows the parameters to be changed on the fly. I also see fully Bluetooth capable machines that interrupt your detector returns to allow you to answer your phone when you can't hear it any other way. I see monopulse resolution coils that transmit a single pulse and receive the target information on multiple coils to get a 3 dimensional estimate of the target itself on an LCD screen.

More about the FFT. The algorithm allows for analysis in time, frequency and phase shift simultaneously with amplitude skewing. This allows you to analyze the return signal on an item and give you such information as the total mass of the target and with enough refinement, the elemental composition of a target. A word of caution. It takes a LONG time to do this on an 8 bit machine running at 60mhz. You will need to use much more powerful processor that will cost significantly more than today's instruments cost. A 1ghz, 64 bit processor will soon be the basic building block for a metal detector.

The future is not a place for those who want to buy a metal detector for a few dollars and find a galleon full of gold coins. They will be for the serious treasure hunter only. Don't hold your breath waiting for this technology. The manufacturers and designers are selling far too many of the current crop of machines to worry about advancing their machines to match the technology. The first company to do it all will face critics who will call them frauds.

The above is my own considered opinion based on my electronics engineering and physics background.

Received my Fisher Gold Bug Pro. Lightning-fast recovery speeds. It has dual processors but I can't find any info on the make of processors or the speeds they run at.

Came across another dual processor machine: the Argus GD4004a, made in Germany. It's a PI machine and claims to have some form of discrimination. I only skimmed thru the manual and will study it later; seems to be an interesting machine! You can download it here

.

Maybe we shall see quad and hexacore detectors in the near future.  Smiley
