Go Up Go Down

Hi to everyone, looks like a great forum, I'm looking forward to learning lots from you guys and gals.

This is my first post, so I'll give you a bit of my background and then ask a few questions if I may.

I have an electronics background and have recently retired. I was interested in making a metal detector a few years ago and in fact re-designed a PIC based PI detector and re-wrote the PIC code to give it more features. I bought all the components (which I still have) but never built it. Things have moved on, so I'm happy to use the mechanical parts for a new project but don't want to finish the original project.

Anyway, I'm now retired (and have more time) and want to build a metal detector but don't know which way to jump. I fancy buying a kit from Silverdog but should I chose a PI or a VLF?

The unit will not be used for serious metal detecting, only an occasional bit of fun.

Am I right in thinking that a flat concentrically wound coil is only of benifit with a PI detector, as the capacitance is reduced which allows the coil to "charge" and "discharge" more quickly?

I've already read quite a bit on these forums and elsewhere, so I appreciate most of the pro's and con's of the different types of detector.

Last question (for the time being), is there somewhere in the UK where I can purchase coil housings from, so that I can pot my creations?

I'm quite happy to put the time into carefully making a quality coil or coils. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome from New Mexico.

All of silver dogs kits have extensive documentation and proven working machines on this and a particular other forum.

Without a really cool junk box , I doubt you could buy the parts never mind build the PC board for those kits for less then he offers.

A o-scope is sorta a prerequisite on some of the kits.

Time a Patient's on all.

Thanks Homefire.
I have a digital 'scope and several other pieces of test kit so no problems there.
Still undecided, will have to do more research.
