Hello!
Basically I would like to share my build of BFO metal detector and try to improve project. Design I took from

this homepage.
So everything about build should be clear if not, I can answer some questions.
In my case I add RGB Led for visual reference, potentiometer for sensitivity regulation and jumper for debugging mode so I can see through serial connection on computer some details about readings and timer values.
At end of build performance in my case is not so good and I think it is because of coil shabby build. Before I put it on shaft, coil can see ordinary gold ring on about 10-15cm, now it is about 5-10cm. Currently everything works on 5v, but increasing voltage also depth could increase. If transistor 2n2222 is in stable temperature, than metal detector works pretty stable.
I found this metal detector good for electric or other wire installation find in walls.

As I know at some level microcontroller programming I plan to build VLF or PI type detector in future. Wink  Detecting

This is an issue of timing by the processor and not really a function of the coil. You can experiment if you want but you are taxing your system as it is. You would be far better with a 555 to drive the coil and the processor to interpret the signal shift. You see, the time it takes to build your field and then interpret it is just beyond the capacity of your Arduino except for rudimentary function. This design was meant to be a parlor trick and not a full system.

Look around here and see what else is available.

Still I think depth reduce is because of clunks of solder next to coil.

Right, with 555 timer it should work better. Or two Attiny25 as in

Still this metal detector does the magic and at least up to 10 cm does detect metal. Smiley  It is one of best - worth try Arduino projects I know. Beginners can learn a lot and development possibilities are great.

The coil needs to be electrically sound, not pretty. As long as you have the correct number of windings, you should be all right.

Yes, this is a good tool to learn but to expect top notch performance is a stretch.

A short explanation on how it works would be cool.     Ignorant I am.   LOL

Go here for an explanation. It uses the frequency as a measure of time fed into the Arduino chip (an Atmel Chip). Any deviation is fed to the Piezo as a beep.

What do You mean by "electrically sound". If I do calculations by this:

hello berimor,

i did an arduino shield from that project
can you give me datas from implementation of a sens pot into circuit and sourcecode
i use adruino uno

is it possible to feed the coil with a higher voltage
dc-dc step up - more coil power ?

regards
