Post may be old, but I'm still interested in metal detectors.
Pot in my project I used for experimental purpose more than for real need. To adjust sensitivity and to change volume of speaker. Also I experiment with changing some variables in code.

Theoretically possible to use higher power for coil, but it will change frequency. higher power you have - lower frequency you will get - smaller coil you need to get frequency back again usable for detecting. Thats why i did not try this road to go. limitations of physics. I had idea to play with higher voltage or higher current but didn't try that. Anyway correct me if I am wrong.

I made it happen by programming in Atmel chipset. If You are familiar with programming microchips I can explain...
