Look - my first post after months of lurking!!!  Cheesy  Mouser has lots of electronic components... probably goes without saying.  But I've also found that Small Bear Electronics (online mom & pop operation) carries a good selection of opamps, ICs & other components used for building effects pedals for electric guitars (my other hobby).  Some of them are also used in metal detector circuits.  Might want to check them out:

www.bgmicro.com
is my favourite. They are BG Micro and are in Garland, Texas. They do Postal or maybe UPS, but I have always used air postal as it zips through customs! I usually do and order, fax it to them to get the shipping and insurance cost as well whether they have all the items, they get back to me in less than a week with prices and what they can supply.... I send them a bank money-order, they send parts.... everybody happy!

Some of the stuff they have is what would be called surplus and some is discontinued stuff, usually JUST what you need! Last shipment I got a 1/2 dozen GPS antenna/receivers, CHEEEEEP!

You can download the catalogue, as a PDF, sign up as a site member and get a customer number. You can even set up a wish list.

ok,  i'm having all kinds of fun trying to find the correct wire gauge, and lengths for coils.
what is the best average gauge to use, and where can it be found at a reasonable price?

You can get #22, tinned, multistrand wire, at Jameco, in 100 and 1000 foot rolls.... it is not cheap. I was looking in my PDF catalogue, just last night, for that very thing!

I think I will be using #18 speaker wire which I can get in 100 foot rolls for around $10, split, it makes 200 feet and the heavy insulation will lower distributed capacitance as well as proximity losses. Cheap like borscht. Besides, it is "Litz wire."
