I'd look close at either of these two.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I found the number of different brands and features overwhelming.  I think you're on the right track.  Look at the MD in the price range you plan to spend, compare them side to side.  Have some key lime pie and a cup of coffee, then make the call and order.  You're going to want 5 more MD's anyway so you'll own them all eventually.  Someone in their post named the top two and I wanna say now wait a minute....what about Fisher?Huh?

Okle your right Fisher makes good detectors also each of use have our favorite brand even tho we may use several brands. Personally I like Garrett  because I have owned one or more since 1971. The thing is no one can tell anyone else what the best for them is, to many questions  #1 are you a treasure/ relic hunter or a coin shooter if you are a TH/relic hunter an old BFO will work  for you. But if you mainly hunt parks and school yards you need a different type of detector.
I have several Garrett BFO and TR/Vlf detectors I use for cache hunting and relic hunting I have a Garrett seahunter I use for water hunting I use a Bounty Hunter QD in dry sand I don't hunt park's or school yards but if I did I would use the Garrett 350. So you see there is no one perfect detector so how can we suggest to anyone what to buy.

Seldom -  you are exactly right.  I threw some bait out there about Fisher so I'd get a response.  I don't know anything about MD.  You're the Man!  I am surprised to see you like the Bounty Hunters.  They looked like kinda cheap but you just validated them in my mind cause you use one.   Shocked

Lots of hunters start with BH  I keep the QD in my truck so if i see something I want check out its always there and if I get robbed its no big deal, but if they get one of my other machines I am out 500 to a grand not good. I see BH at flea markets and garage sales every week for less the a 100 bucks keep your eyes open and get one if you can. Good back up.

So do people with MD's get robbed often?  Seems strange to me.  Is it for the equipment mainly or is it for what they are finding?

I find this discussion interesting. I'm on the verge of buying a White's Spectra V3i without the wireless headphone.  I live in the western US, where there are lots of wide open spaces, so I'm not sure what the wireless headphones really buy me and they make the V3i $300 more expensive.  Moutains surround me.  There are ghost town and possible gold as well as relic hunting.  I have up to $1750 to spend on my MD.  I can get the 3Vi w/o the headphones for $1400.  If I buy from Kellyco. They offer a deal or at least the second detector for a huge discount.  I was thinking of getting my wife a simple one.  If she finds something I can run the V3i over it to see what it tells me.  Remember I have $350 to play with after buying the V3i so I can get a second better detector for my wife or I can buy a second coil or whatever.

Here are some of my options if I buy from Kellyco.  I can choose one of the free items or if I want one of the other items I just pay the shown price.  I'm just not really sure what is junk wand what isn't or would I be better off just buying a second, better MD:
Bounty Hunter Pin Pointer Detector Retail Price $69.00  FREE!
Automax V4 Pinpointer Detector FREE!
Bounty Hunter VLF FREE!
Bounty Hunter Gold Digger FREE!
1st Texas Pilot $40.00
MP3 Pro Multi Power $45.00
MP5 Pro Multi Power $50.00
MPX Multi Power $65.00
Titan 2000 with 8" Coil $75.00
Pioneer 505 with 8" Coil $85.00
Titan 2000 Pro - 8" and 4" coils (2 coils) $95.00
Pioneer 505 Pro - 8" and 4" coils (2 coils) $100.00
Viper Trident $164.00
Cobra Land Beach & Water $169.00

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I have the vmax and not happy with it and thinking about one of these:
