Good Morning: on your subject which one for beginner, I am truly a beginner and I'm not sure that I purchased the right detector. I have a MinLad Explorer SE, I thought I would get a top of the line detector but I'm not sure how to work all the bells and whistles. I guess I really need to spend more time with my detector and learn what all it can do... I have a 10" coil and 15x12 coil  and thought I might need a smaller coil to look at smaller targets, am I on the right track?

Snocatfun, read the manual then read it again.   Then go out and hunt and then come back and read the manual again and then go out and hunt.   In the meantime between reading the manual and going out and hunting, read some of the posts here.   You'll find them both educational and inspirational which will definitely shorten your learning curve.   The metal detector is like any other tool, the more you work with it and get familiar with it, the better you'll do.
