does anyone now the history of the 2nd dragoons?

i was researching these soldiers a little bit, but couldn't really find the answers to my questions. Were they foreign troops or immigrants? were they strictly cavalry? were they militia or mercenary types or were they actual US Army soldiers? the reason i ask, is the place where Johnston's Army marched through in the Utah war of 1857 is literally a couple miles up the road from where i live. if anyone can help I'd appreciate it greatly.

i don't know...we might be thinking of the same thing. these guys don't really look like US cavalry at all, they almost look German or some other foreign branch going off of their uniforms, but i honestly don't know

from what i'm finding it seems like they were in fact light infantry on horse back/ cavalry, created by George Washington during the Revolutionary War and were used for flank and rear guards for the massing and manuevering army. here's the link to one site i found

You're right about the Dragoons being essentially mounted infantry. The idea was that they would ride to the battle site, and then fight as infantry (thus providing a rapid response force---land-locked marines (?)). Dragoons were really prevalent before the Civil War. By the time the CW was over, the day of the Dragoon was over and the units were absorbed into the cavalry and redesignated as cavalry

very good information, thank you. i went to a military museum here at Fort Douglas and saw their uniforms and knew that they marched a few miles from my current living area during the war of 1857, so my interest int hem grew even more. i found the uniforms very interesting, especially the large caps

outstanding!! thank you greatly. it's awesome to sit at Echo canyon like i was yesterday, and imagine the dragoons marching through. the Mormon militia defenses are still in place from 1857....it's as if they just got up to stretch their legs from laying in the prone behind their rifle. the ruins are still there, and you almost expect someone from back them to walk back up and take his post next to you, based off the condition these defenses are still in
