Go Up Go Down

One of the great things I love about E-TRAC is the ability to change my settings on the fly.  When I am walking through the field and hit an iron area its time to slow down and change a few settings.  First off I will start searching the field at a normal pace making sure my coil is touching the ground (or near) at both ends of the sweep.  Yes yes we all know this but I cant tell you how many times I notice guys that have been metal detecting much longer them I, sweeping their coil off the ground at the ends of their sweep, high enough to pass over my shoe if it was there.  If you are going to do that then it?s pointless, you are making your sweeps to large. Shorten your sweep.

Here is my basic setting before I go out.

Search area type:  Farm lands and arid sagebrush lands.
Basic settings:
1.   Discrimination -  minimal amount as possible (almost to all metal mode)
2.   Auto sensitivity ? highest without falsing
       In Expert Menu:
3.   Recovery Deep ? On
4.   Recover Fast ? Off
5.   Trash Density ? Low
6.   Ground ? Difficult (because here I am the ground is very mineralized)

Now when you hit that darn noisy heavy iron area its time to make some changes.  I can?t tell you how many times I have passed over a heavy iron area that many others have passed over and pulled goodies out. So here is the quick and simple change.

In Expert Menu:
3.  Recovery Deep ? Off
4.  Recover Fast ? On
5.  Trash Density ? High

And the last trick to really get those goodies out (without digging all the iron stuff like some of you like to do); use the 90 degree search pattern.  Walk strait and slower then before and listen to the signals.  If you hear something that has any clue of being non iron then change your angle of attack by 90 degrees, heck even if you don?t hear a good signal do it anyways.  Then use the pinpoint and with the sound and visual indicators on target dig your treasure.

When your done doing your best then switch back to your previous setting and head off to look for some more left-behinds.

I like to set up another saved mode in Ferrous for the junky,Trashy iron sites.
I use a wide open screen,Trash density high,Deep off,Fast on,Gain at 30,
I want Gain maxed out to hear any deep targets, plus this eliminates turning
Recovery deep on. Tones set to two.
Sensitivity in Manual,at 29.
In this setup, you will hear all targets, but the iron will emit a low grunt tone,
you have to learn to just ignore the low grunts and listen for (ANY) Higher tones.
Don't trust the id on the screen in the trashy areas.
Just go by sound, and dig any higher tones.
This setup has pulled a lot of old coins out of trash, where i never even got a signal in Conductive sounds.
Best of luck.
