Does anyone have opinions about the GPX 4800? I understand it cannot be submurged like the excal II. I also read that the excal II does not perform well in salt which I know is not true. Any thoughts would be appreciated...Bnthere

The GPX4800 is one of the newer Minelab detectors with the GPX5000 being the latest entry from them. The GPX series has an extremely high learning curve while the Excalibur II is nearly a turn on and go machine. If you are planning to use it in water, get the Excalibur and save your finds until you can pay for a GPX model later. With the exception of my very first detector, every last one of mine was paid for by things I have found. It's kind of cool the way that works out.

Silverscoop76, a local friend here in Perth and user on this forum (although not lately) assures me that his works just as good on land as in the water. Study up on the use of a Double D coil in advance. Pinpointing is easy once you get the knack. But you need to know the knack. Plenty of help right here on this forum. Search for Double D.

Of course you can submerge the coil just not the unit.

I was talking with a local minelab dealer and he said that the 4800 will go 2-3 times deeper than the Excal or Sovereign Gt.

That's pretty deep on low tide wet sand if you think about it.

I think that it will be my next detector.

When I bought My GP3500 and other minelab coils for the GP/X they said they are not waterproof, which is why this is the third
reason why people buy coiltek coils, it maybe a little thing you should ask minelab them selves as to weather they have now
waterproofed their coils for this series of machines.

I just investigated it and your right,The coil is not waterproof....Truthfully have never heard of a non water proof coil in the last few years.

My mistake.Good to no.

Glad to help JP, Also the coiltek Little Joey is not waterproof but nealy all their other coils are, and before minelab
started making their own coils, Coiltek use to make all the coils for Minelab and out of all the coil makers, they
are the only people who have the tune up specs for Minelab machines, and the other folks just did it by trial and error.

You would think on a $5000 top of the line detector that you could get the coil wet,they must have missed that on advertising the ultimate beach machine.

Yes JP you would of thought so, It just makes sence that way, But their ansewer would be it's a prospecting machine
and it's ment for use in the gold fields, But like you said with the birth of the GP/X series being able to discriminate
that people wold want to use it all over the place, from the mountains to the sea.
