It's funny you should say that coz when i first got mine it got the Dew off the grass all over it, and that night i read that
bit about it not being waterproof and i was worried for days, so much so I rang the Guys at Minelab the next day.
But they said it's only if you try and teach it how to swim. Grin Grin

This is great information.  As a practical matter with a huge price difference between the 2 machines (Excal and GPX) would you say that the GPX with the waterproof coil is worth the extra money?  Beach detecting is wet and often messy and I don't want to have a machine that I have to baby along being concerned about every drop of rain, salt spray or wet sand.  At the same time I have found Minelab machines to be durable and able to take some punishment.  Who wouldn't want to go deeper if possible??  Thanks..Gary

G Day Gary, Like you say having to baby it along, Yeah thats right, but there is another down side and that is carrying
that battery pack on ya back all day I remember my GP had a lead Gel cel battery and that made ya back sore from sweat
I know the new series of batteries are alot lighter so that wont be a problem anymore, But you must Keep that Box well
clear of water, and keep covers on it all the time, there are a few new machines on the market that are waterproof but
i would not be happy about taking that one to the beach, but if money is no object then go for it, but you really need to
be out everyday to get it to pay for it's self.

Thanks AU.  I don't go every day.  I only go when conditions are right on beach.  I am much more a general detector than a beach specialist.  I am considering a hookah though so there goes the expense again if I do it.  It would be nice on warm calm days I think.  I'll stick with the Excal then if I find a hot on land site I may add to the stable...gary

Gary if you own the Excal already then I'd stick with it and when you have dug up a couple of nice rings
then buy what ever you like the sound of, and if you find lots then buy the GPX, and say to the wife
But Honey i'm only doing this for you Kiss and you won't get in trouble

Hello,

Below is an email I recieved from a Local dealer explaining the 4800 to me.

JP,  I appreciate you taking the time to email me about the Minelab Pulse Induction detectors, or any other for that matter since I use, sell, compare and train on all 5 major brands.

The GPX machines are the deepest on the market and can handle salt beach better than any other detector, but there are drawbacks.  You need to make sure the beaches do not have a lot of electrical interference near by and the PI units (all brands) can easily hear them and interfere with their function.

If you primarily hunt gold rings and coins, then go with the GPX-4800 and save the money.  Right now I am offering a Spring Promo on the 4800 for $4035 shipped and that includes 3 Days training.

Yes the older Minelab PI?s will also work and you may find one of them at a better price.  The only drawback is the lack of additional timings on the SD series.  Try to stick with a GP-3500 or newer if you can find one.

You?ll get 2 to 3 times the depth of your Sov GT.

I am heading out of town for the week to train customers and will not be back until Tuesday 19th.

Please reply then and I?ll be happy to answer any more questions.

Gerry

.......This is from me and not the dealer above.

My guess is that Minelab will release something new this year like an Excaliber 3 with 28 frequecies?

Or somekind of waterproof SD?

It would only make since for them to dominate the deepths with a waterproof detector with the maxium amount of frequincies or the technology that they have created that have been proven to work.

If you think about it,The SovGt and the Excal are really outdated regardless of how will they still preform.

My only thought about a new Excal 3 would be that it would be very cheap compared to the 4800 and might over shadow it?

But than again it would be the Ultimate waterproof detector and not a prospecting detector.

Only time will tell.
