I purchased the Minelab Excaliber recently from a pawn shop. They didn't have the owners
manuel. It looks real good and I'm familiar with the electronics since I've owned a Sovreign
XS for a number of years. The connection to the battery has a rubber gasket on it. Should
anything be put on this gasket periodically? I'll be getting a book, but would like to take it in the water in the next couple of days..   John in Va..

There is a sealant that divers use which doesn't attack rubber at all which I use for sealing my underwater detector. It comes in tiny little tubes here as well as large ones. Sorry, but I can't remember the name at the moment since I buy the tiny tubes and toss them when finished. If I need more, I go to the dive shop.

by the way the first excaliburs were notorious leakers make sure you put a liberal coating of silicon on the seals they cost a fortune to repair.

I used Silicone Grease on those Gaskets--Now, I didn't use it on an Excalibur---It was another unit I had, but the usage ought to be the same. Some hardware stores carry this silicone grease, but Dive shops may have it also as the other fellow is saying... There's something else I'd like to add---if you're not planning to ever open some gasket or compartment on a detector, then you can use a pliable but very tough waterproof sealant that is sort of like caulking--the name of the type a buddy and I used when making things absolutely waterproof on underwater detectors is called GOOP.  Let me tell you, that stuff is so tough you can barely get it off when it's put on something--but oddly enough, you can wet your fingers and touch it or mold it around a part you want to seal----but never try that without your finger wet--that stuff is so gooey and sticky it'll get on you and you'll have a time getting it off. But when it dries it is pliable much like rubber and will totally be waterproof. I don't think the Minelab folks would appreciate you sending an Excalibur in to them to repair with goop on the seals, but it would definitely be waterproof if applied right-ha! The Silicone idea may be the best for the  Excalibur... Great Detecting

I mostly use a Garrett Sea Hunter but also have one I designed and built for myself.
