Alrighty then:

I am new to the forum. I am positive you get questions like this all the time, but I will ask it anyway. The Minelab Sterling: As far as I know it was only released in AU (not gold, the country), and from what I have seen it has gone for $117-$350 USD in AU. Now, I found one for $100... Is it worth my time or should I go with a $75 Tesoro Compadre? I need a turn on and go metal detector for leaving in my truck and for friend and family... just a general back-up.

Peace

Sean

Go with the Minelab. I have a different model of a turn on and go Minelab. It has a bare minimum of control and that's all I need. The machine is superior to my Compadre, which I do like a lot.

Buy it fast and don't look back!!!
Better and deeper than a Tesoro in mineralized ground!!!
Deeper than most Tesoros anyways when tuned.

Make sure you get the newer Musketeer Advantage searchcoil or the solid white SUPERSEARCH coil.
The older Treasure searchcoil had its problems and is to be avoided.

Thanks for the help. I am on my way into Spokane (hour drive) to get it now. Still kinda want a second little machine like this to polish off the collection for now. I suppose I will be patient and wait.

Peace

Sean
Alright, I got it home. I played it smart and banked on my knowledge and ability to "fix anything". First thing I did was pick it up and turn it on... nothing. Opened up the battery compartment and the batteries were burst and the wire at the connection was toast. Still, I asked for new batteries and proceded to try it out again in front of the pawn shop owner. Sticker on it was $99 and I offered him $50 stating that it had to be fixed. Got it for $75 ($80 after tax) and drove to another local pawn shop that specialized in tools. Picked up a nice soldering iron for $15 and continued to Radio Shack where I got the supplies needed for the repair for $8. So far the running tab is $103. Hopefully it works after I fix it today. It does have the Treasure Search coil, but I will replace that and soup this baby up at a later date.

Peace

Sean
Got all put back together. Not running. Can anyone think of anything else I should check?

Aside from the obvious battery damage, look for mechanical damage. Look for loose wires at the coil. Take the connector apart carefully and see that all the wires are connected and not broken free or spindly. Look for corrosion on the circuit board from the battery leakage. Look for burned traces on the PC board.

I suppose I should have asked. Does it make any noises at all or is it just stone cold dead?

Voila! Fixed... sort of. I got the problem sorta figured out before I read your post. I was working with my stereo on and after tooling around and getting annoyed I turned off my music and was able to hear the miniscule noise coming from the machine when tested. Thus, I just plugged in some headphones and guess what! Works like a dream! Since I love getting a bargain, anyone have a guestimate off hand about how much my detector is now worth?

Happy Detecting,

Sean
Also, if anyone has a clue on how to fix the audio, let me know.

Thanks

Good job, mate! Most likely the speaker itself is bad if your headphones work. You can probably find an old speaker from a PC that will work. People sometimes turn the volume up so loud they crack the magnet in the voice coil of the speaker. The tendency to do that happens when you are in a noisy environment. Just natural.

So, off to the local junkyard for a small old PC speaker. Good hunting! Both on the speaker and with your repaired detector.

Thanks for the help. Can't wait for the weather here in WA to improve so I can get out hunting. I have big plans for this detector on my trip to So. Idaho.
