Hi maltaman,

I don't own one, (but I sure want to  Cry ) but from what I've read, you really have to slow your sweep speed down to get the most out of it. That's to get max depth and ID, but maybe you can tweak the settings to get faster recovery on the shallower tagets by cranking in some more discrimination and just listen to the tones. I think the display might be too slow to respond in a competition hunt, but I may be wrong.

I've heard that the Fisher 1235 or 1236 is great for hunts because of it's fast recovery rate, so you might want to consider these if you want a machine primarily for seeded hunts.

Have fun with your new machine!
Mike

Minelab Safari & the Garrett 250

Go Up Go Down

I purchased a Minelab Safari in the middle of April 2009.  It is very true about the deep-seeking, compared to other metal detectors.  I have been seaching the beaches here in Florida and have found enough with my Safari in two months that have paid myself back for my investment in the metal detector and have bought myself a boat to search the islands.  I have found that seaching for items in the wet ground with the Safari is something to be loved and hated.  When the depth meter pegs out at the max depth, plan on digging deep.  Using a big coil to cover a large area, i.e. beach or park,  makes pinpointing difficult.  To keep from digging a hugh hole I would recomend a pinpointer of some sort for fast recovery.  So, YES, to your question.  Congrate on your purchase and good luck with your swingin'.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Had my Safari for about 8 months now and I'm just about getting the hang of it.  It's a great machine, very deep and easy to use.  Just make sure you use it in Low Trash setting otherwise the increase in noise will drive you round the bend.

Most any decent detector will get 85% of whats in the ground at one time or another. The bbs and fbs minelabs seems to do great at searching out the deeper coins they seem to adjust to ground minerals better than some other detectors. I have a soverign and they do about as well as a explorer if u use them right. The safari is good but all minelabs are slow recovery un like the new fishers and Teks. The Teks and Fishers are fast recovery and u can whip them fast. But minelabs will sneak out the silver.

Yep,
The recovery speed on my Explorer II is painful...
Wouldn't change it though, just tends to make you search more thoroughly.
