Sovereign GT C Scope 550 Minelab Quattro Compadre
« on: March 21, 2009, 04:59:07 am »
Go Up Go Down

Hi all !

I've been using a 2nd hand Quattro for ten months now, and with reasonable success.

Living at the (north) seaside, I hunt most of the time the wet sands areas at low tide, with no major problems : not enough iron to fool the "slow" quattro. (Dry sand is hunted with old TR's).

Now, I do not know you, folks, but I live in the constant fair of a failure of my equipment, so I want to buy another Minelab unit for the wet sand. Not necessary ment to be a backup. The "Q" might get some rest, too.

But what?

X-70 in prospecting mode-----any good on the wet?

Older 2nd hand explorer ...XS,II, SE are they that different from each other?

Should I save some Quattro gold to buy an Etrac?

(The Safari is not different enough from my Quattro...)

I know, those questions are frequenty asked.

The problem is I do not know these detectors.

Any help is welcome.

Thank you.

Hi,
I have the Explorer II - well known for being superb beach machines.
The new Safari is quite a bit different to the quattro in terms of recovery speed from Iron contamination.
The only real differences between XS SE and II are really just minor stuff, such as some changes to the "Menus" - basically all the same machine.
However, the "pro" standard coil as fitted to the SE is a little lighter and goes a little deeper.
The Etrac is a superb machine, I don't know how they go on beaches though!
Might be worth visiting "

" and asking the question.
If it were me, I would, (If you only hunt beaches), go for a good P.I. Machine.
It'll be much more stable and go a lot deeper.
For the cost of probably a secondhand SE or II you could get a real good P.I.

Thanks for the tips, Paul.

I have problems with PI machines, owned a Cscope 6PI and tested the 7UMD.

I don't find them to go deeper than the Quattro. In fact, I even found them to have poor detection depth compared with VLF/TR units.

But I frankly do not know about other PI models. Those C scopes are Motion PI models, I understand from some reading that other PIs are motionless detectors.

I 'll read some field tests and comments about other brands PIs.

Do they get better depth over Explorers?

Thanks again

HH

Hi,
One of Eric Fosters "Goldscan" P.I's might fit the bill.
They can go really deep!
But, if where you are searching doesn't suffer too much from minerlisation or too much iron then Maybe an Explorer might be a better bet.
The only drawback I can see is the fairly slow recovery time of the Explorer on iron.
I usually run mine in all metal if there's not too much iron about.
As there's no discrim. with a P.I.  i suppose its all the same really!
The ability to change coils pretty quickly on the Explorer is a bonus too.
