X terra DD coil

Mike, the double D coil is an odd beast. The sensitivity is along then entire length of the center overlap. That is, the entire center of the coil from the top to the bottom along the overlap of the two coils. This overlap gives it extreme depth for all targets but makes pinpointing a bit hard. It takes a bit of practice but here's the basic technique.

Along the coil swing, you get a target. If you were to place the coil down on the ground at that moment, your target would be somewhere under the vertical overlap of the two coils which are laid side by side as two letter Ds, one reversed. Hence the coil name. Since the coil is 10 inches in diameter, that means the item is somewhere in a 10 inch line directly under the coil. It could be left or right of that by about an inch or two making digging an onerous task.

The method of X-ing the target is the fastest way to learn to pinpoint. You first go in one direction, find the target, then swing the detector in a pattern that is 90 degrees from the original swing. Where the two peak detection areas overlap will be marked by an imaginary X which is the precise location of your target. The first few hundred times you do it, you will improve to the point of needing less and less of an angular differential during the swing. I now use only the briefest of figure 8 patterns to isolate a target under the Double D coil.

A tip. Because of the human eye and its characteristics, you can give yourself an edge. Put a green or red fluorescent dot on the exact center of the vertical overlap of the D segments. Defocus your vision but watch the coil as you swing it in the X pattern or figure 8 pattern. Quickly move the coil away while still staring at the ground and a negative image of the dot pattern will leave a sort of floating image on your retina that will be seen superimposed over the ground in front of you. This squiggle of light will mark your target perfectly. After a while you can dispose of the dot but it will amaze you with how well it aids in learning. If you use a red dot, the squiggle will be in green. If you use green, the squiggle will be red. Your retina retains a negative of the color.
