Missouri is probably like most states in that they don't have any prohibitions choosing to leave that decision to the local caretakers of the city parks - namely the cities in chieh they reside. Asking local authorities about it often leads to a "no" answer even if it is legal. What I suggest is to carry your finds in a two pocket pouch like a nail apron from Ace Hardware. Keep all of the junk and dangerous articles on one side and your low value coins on the other. High value coins and jewelry should go safely into a pocket away from sight. If anyone stops you or asks about what you are doing, show them the junk. Often the sight of you carrying away needles, beer tabs, bottle caps and nails is enough to convince them that you are harmless. If they ask about good finds, show them your coins but never offer to show them the high value stuff.

And one important reminder: DO NO DAMAGE TO THE PARK. Dig carefully and always repair your holes. I always carry a baggie full of grass seed and a dish washing soap bottle filled with water to repair those holes which are noticeable. Be a good guy and you will almost never get any flack.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

MOST city parks will let you detect altho laws are for daytime as most large cities are off limits after dark or 11 pm. due to crime etc. I live in sw mo and we have restrictions here in my town (pop 170,000) and its un said to dig appropriately. DON"T  use a shovel (army shovel) etc unless you want to get run off.  Use your head for the next generation.  shortribs
