I found my first coin this last week (U. S. '39 penny) and couldn't remember the years and material that they were not made of copper.  Was it zinc?

In 1943, due to World War II, copper was in short supply so the US minted the 1943 penny at all three mints in steel. They were plated with zinc to stop the rust giving them a silver appearance. The zinc plating of steel is also known as galvanizing. Any dropped in the ground would not likely have survived intact. Just the slightest scratch on the zinc coating would have caused it to rust rapidly.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
