Christian, I'm guessing nickel-silver. Mostly from the photos.

Ok Guys,..so it`s not gold then...again,thanks for your time and expertize on this matter.
I`m only going off the results from the precious metal tester I have.
Seems like a few people are a little bit harsh about their views on my find, overlooking the fact that it`s actually a great find for a novice such as myself...seems like some people are still members of the flat earth society.

I have taken on board what has been said regarding this matter and I`m very grateful,I will read more about oxidization and tarnishing on metals which will help me in the future.

Best Wishes and Good Hunting too All.

Andrew.

Andrew,

as I expressed earlier this is a very nice find no doubt. Also we do not intend to sound harsh and we can be wrong in our judgement. We try our best to help by giving a sound oppinion. Hence my best hint is to take it to a local jeweler and ask him for his oppinion. He can precisely test it.

I really do not want to discourage you but I would want to think that it takes about 2 years of detecting in Germany to find a gold coin. They are really really rare.

Againa s I said gold will never tarnish - you can ask any jeweler about this, too.

I suggest you show your vey nice find to a jeweller and let us know what it is for sure.

Regards and keep up the good work,

Christian

Thank you Christian for you insight and encouragement.

I also found this picture,a piece of the Saxon hoard found in the U.K.
PLEASE don`t tell me this is Not tarnished in any way.

Regards
Andrew.
Reverse side requested for Outback.
I`m almost to afraid to show my other finds, with the amount of debunking I received with the unknown medallion.

The crude methods used for mixing gold alloys back then means that the elemental metals did not mix properly. The patch you see is a copper area that didn't melt during the alloying process. Are you aware of the reasons that copper, brass, silver and platinum are the metals used to alloy gold for jewelry? It's because of the fact, not the guess or supposition, that when properly alloyed, there is no chance of an oxygen molecule bonding with the metal alloy. Zero chance. At the atomic level, there are no valence protons available so there is no tarnish. Those valence protons are a must to allow oxidation to occur.

In some cases, gold has been electroplated by soil conditions (in the ground in high acidity or alkalinity) and a plating of a micron or so can look like a bit of tarnish and even give gold alloy a sort of color caste to it. But, unlike tarnish, it is a surface binding rather than an elemental change by oxidation. Gold alloys do not tarnish and the metals in those alloys are chosen to guarantee that.

Just do yourself a favor and ask a jeweler to identify the metal. People here are being very kind to help you and explain things to you. Don't fight them. Some have got decades of experience behind them. Some have university studies in metallurgy. I applaud your find. It's a rare find and one of which to be very proud. But it is not gold. Your pen may not be lying. It might be confused by something in the metal's composition.

Thank you golddigger.
Ok,that`s a lot clearer to me now!..I`m very grateful you spent the time to post your thoughts.
I apologize if I sound like I`m fighting and insisting that anybody is wrong, this was not my intention. Smiley
Although I know (as do you) of instants where the "so called experts" do get it wrong, also, having many years experience in certain fields does not guarantee a thing (an educated guess being the perfect example).I will however,at the first opportunity find a good jeweler and ask for their opinion.
Everyone has been very helpful if not a little rigid on their comments.

Dangermanghost, I will be keenly interested in what you discover. I too find it curious that your tests indicated it was 14k gold when I believe it wasn't. So please, when you get your results, let me know what it really is made from.

Hey, this is a fun way to get your 15 posts, is it not?

Hi Golddigger.
You Sir,..will be "top of the list" along with Christian, when I get the correct results on the alloys present within this object.if the results are negative, then the guy who sold me the testing pen will hear all about my displeasure with his faulty items. Club..not to mention I`d be truly VERY embarrassed..and not worthy of being a member here  Pray
I still havn`t got the hang of this posting system yet !...but to be sure,a proper fun way to get all my posts. Wink
Hi All.
I know this is pfennig,..but is it gold plated !?
