That chip has an abundance of analog to digital converters and is normally used for circumstances where you need to read or sense voltage levels. Because of that, the default mode is analog and you have to force it into digital mode by setting the ADCON0 register and then setting the ports to be tristated to outputs. I used to be a 3rd Parth Rep for Microchip and went to all of their conferences back in the early days of the company. The spec sheets have not really been fully inclusive of that information and we were expected to tell clients all about the full features. Normally, you would select the chip based on your needs not just because you have one.

Yes you are quite right about the chip selection. I have been looking on the net about clocks and pic 16f690, guess what no one has used it to make an LED clock so I think that I have spent all the time that I need to on this chip, time to move on.

A very cheap alternative is the PIC16F84 which can be had for just under a dollar on eBay.

That wont be necessary GD, I finally nail'd it. It's still under test at the moment but it has not lost nor gain'd time since 01h00 this morning but I'll only know just how well it's working in a month, if the time is still correct then I'll be happy with it.

Was it the digital settings I suggested earlier?

DUH I'm just going to have to admit pure and plain stupidity, the 16f690 can run at a maximum internal frequency of 8Mhz I use two timers, timer0 for the 7 segment refresh and timer two for the clock count. I had the internal timer set to 4.915232 Mhz (Gives a 60 hz in timer 2) I had a crystal of 19.660800 Mhz and that was the big problem, I cant figure out why I used that crystal  Idiot then the second problem was that in the timer count when the counter got to 59 min it went to 1 hour so I was losing 60 seconds every hour so now my code has when the min = 9 & mintens = 5 & sec = 60 change the count to the hour digit, now 1 hour is 60 min instead of 59 min. I guess that this is what you call beginners mistakes

The chip can use the internal timer and one of them is the same 32khz used by digital watches. For some odd reason, I believed that is what you were doing.
