Hey tech people out there, I'm handy with a solder iron but not crazy about electronics. I want to add a headphone jack to an old detector that has none at all now. Can I just cut the wires off the existing speaker and solder them to the headphone jack and TADA!!!?Huh?  speak english please, and only talk about things I can buy at radio shack lol.

Don't know man, I've never done it.  It seems logical that would work, but I'm not an electronics guy, either.  I have messed around with simple stuff like that and made things work (don't know why they did, but they did)!  If I wanted to do what you want to do, I would try it.  If it doesn't work you should be able to solder the leads back on the speaker.  Don't cut the leads too short! Wise

Look on the speaker and see what it says regarding ohms. As long as they say 4 ohm or 8 ohm, standard headphones will work. Be sure to add a volume control in the circuit or use volume control headphones or you may not even hear the phone ring next until the ringing in your ears dies down.

back to radio shack for a volume control!!

Get a logarithmic tapered potentiometer for a volume control. A 100k should work. Put it in series with the headphones which will lower the DC voltage but allow the AC to pass to the headphones. Do NOT get a linear tapered potentiometer. You'll have two settings. On loud and very quiet.

Audio taper is the term sometimes used instead. Just stay away from the linear tapered pot.

Thanks I'll ask the tech at radio shack for that because I have no clue what you just said lol. Do I need to repack the muffler bearings while I got the case open?  Cheesy

That's always a good idea. Also, the frammistan pump, pommel feedhorn and relative bearings should be serviced.
