Automax Precision V4 Pinpointer

SHORTEN probe and triple the pickup range.
Plus how a proper adjustment of the internal sensitivity control calibration. So it now works correctly. Makes a worlds of difference.

That is what I did to my Automax V4 Pointer. After I got disgusted about the short range to find targets I made these changes. Plus the lack of sensitivity in response to targets.

See attached photos of before and after example pictures first.
Then detailed pictures of changes.
Plus pictures to shorten and strengthen the probe against breakage.

Example:  In the before photo I used a small ring of solder cut to length. It was the right size for a snug fit to the pinpointer shaft.  Slide the lead ring on to the shaft up to the control box 3  5/8 inches from tip. Pictures show example before removal of handle.

After removal of handle sawed off flush relocate vibrate motor as shown in photos. Hot glue to inside of control box now puts off more vibration to hand for detection. Add 3/4 inch electrical plastic tubing as per photo, 4 7/8 long. Hot melt glue inside slide into position and build up outside for strength. On the other end is where you will wrap the solder bead to increase the sensitivity when probing for metals.

Ok now for a little unknown adjustment. On the backside, under the clip for the belt there is a hole. This hole is for an internal adjustment for a sensitivity control on the printed circuit board. This needs adjustment calibration. Rotate the front panel control knob to a center position. Now adjust the control on the printed circuit board, that the back hole lines up with. Adjust till with unit ON you can adjust till beep or vibration goes off when probe is next to a coin of 1/2 inch distance away. That is it.

1)  Now with the shortened probe beefed up for strength, and easier handling.
2)  The solder wrap for greater sensitivity and metal detection.
3)  Plus the two different sensitivity controls now properlycalibrated, tuned to each other.

I like the shorten version I no longer fear breaking the probe end off. Plus it now fits in my leather tool belt holster more snuggly. Plus the greater pick up distance is great. The calibration now allows the front sensitivity control to work more responsive and solid.
You are now ready to go find treasure.   Rider

your welcome Tazwarrior.

It really is a simple project once you get started.

It has made all the difference in the world to use of the V4.

Hi MetalMaster

You say that now you get three times the depth, but what you did not say is what was the depth that you were getting. So pleas do tell us  Smiley

All the best Xavier

Xavier

In answer to your question of distance to detection of metal objects after modifications of the V4.

Bobbie pins small   3/8 inch
Bobbie pins large    1/2 inch
lead balls small      3/8 inch
pull tabs                3/4 inch
penny                    2 inch
nickel                    2 inch
dime                     1 inch
quarter                  2 inch
silver ring small      1/2 inch
silver ring large       1 inch
gold ring small        3/8 inch
gold ring large         1 inch
silver chain             1/4 inch

The reason I made the changes? Before you actually had to almost touch the object to
get a reading of detection.
The sensitivity increase is do to the placement of the lead solder plus adjustment of the internal sensitivity setting on the printed circuit board. to correspond to a medium way way setting for the external control. Which now allows for a adjustment in a greater range of adjustment, by the external sensitivity control.

I wrote this topic plus one before to help those that had become irritated with the V4 unit after receiving it. That is why I spent the time writing the article plus adding photos of the modifications. To help others if I can. I truly believe this site is a sharing site. That is what this web site is about to me. So that is what I try to do offer help to others if I can.

The other choice was to buy another brand of course but that is of no use to those that already own the V4.

Past posts of mine :

earlier post

In the before photo I used a small ring of solder cut to length. It was the right size for a snug fit to the pinpointer shaft.
Slide the lead ring on to the shaft up to the control box. Turn the pinpointer on as usual and adjust till Buzz then back off on sensitivity till buzzing stops. Now slide the solder ring forward on shaft till it buzzes again. Slide it back till it stops. Note the difference in distance of these two positions and divide in half. This is the position to a fix the solder ring to the shaft. Use a hot melt glue gun to fasten ring in place. The hot melt glue is water proof and strong enough to handle rough use. Now adjust the sensitivity as normal and back off till buzzing stops. The distance is now doubled to response of targets. Plus you will now be able to fine tune the distance to targets.

earlier post of mine for internal adjustment:

If you remove the belt clip, by the two assembly screws holding it.

Underneath you will find a hole.

If you use a very small flat blade non metallic screw driver. Inserted into
this hole at the bottom is a range screw (on the printed circuit board) to set the fine adjustment range to be used by the control
knob. Its a course adjustment for the fine tuning on the outside.

Set the external knob in med position before adjustment of the internal control on the printed circuit board.
These two controls work in tandem to set sensitivity.

The placement of the solder ring acts as a exciter to increase the pick up distance.

The larger 3/4" tubing added keeps the shaft from breaking off at the base so easy.

I hope this is of help to some who wish to modify there V4. But like me are not ready to spend more on a different unit at this time.

Also here are some attached photo of a holster I made for The V4 after shorting the handle. Makes for easier carry from my belt.

Made from 2 inch webbing belt material. Just fold the material per photo and sew and then coat the threads with super glue to water proof the threads.

  Welcome

Hi MetalMaster

Thanks for that information and by the way your finished pin-pointer really looks good. I have started building my own pin-pointer it's PIC based and can detect a copper coin at about 55mm and a nickel coin at about 65mm the funny thing about it, is that it will detect mild steel at about 50mm any how I'm quite happy with the way that it performs at the moment, but will be doing some more research on it on a rainy day. LOL

All the best Xavier
