Go Up Go Down

Hey Folks, I’m missing the battery tray for a Garrett Master Hunter TR Deepseeker (coin master) detector. This unit I believe only requires 4 of the 6 batteries the battery box can hold. I’m thinking about making a replacement since I can’t locate one. I think I have figured out what each pin on the connector is for but I hate to risk being wrong.

If anyone has this model and knows the pin-out for the battery connector could you please let me know?

Thanks.

This schematic appears to be for the ADS version which has 6 batteries. I apparently have a rare model? It is one of the Master Hunter models according to the 1977 catalog (actually the 1977 Consumers Buyers Guide page 9) but the situation is strange. It is the simple TR model but it has a Coin Hunter sticker on it. The coin Hunter only came with one coil but this one came with both an 8” and a 14” so I’m not really sure what I have. Their names got a little squirrelly back then. I think all of the non VLF and non ADS ones only used 4 batteries per that buyers guide.

Crazy hard to figure.

I think I found a serial number on this unit so I’ll contact Garrett and see if they can resolve this for me.

But if anyone has any additional info please share.

Thanks for the help.

Ok, I contacted Garrett and they still make/sell the battery trays. Go Garrett! They deserve praise for continuing to support their products from the ‘70’s !

The 4 battery tray is #2309500
The 6 battery tray is #2308800

Any dealers or others selling these have to get them from Garrett so if anyone is out f stock it “should be a short term problem”. Go directly to Garrett and get one.

I talked to one of the older guys there and he explained that all of the 9v battery trays for the Master Hunter series are made the same and that only the wiring to the connector is different in the control box between the various models.

Hopefully this info will help others.

It turns out that there are physical differences between the battery trays. The 4 battery tray may only have 4 sets of battery contacts installed. The 3 battery tray (23085) may only have three sets. I have seen pictures now of several different ones and the number of contacts varies. So if the guy at Garrett was telling me correctly then maybe what he meant was that the circuit boards for the various trays are the same but it may be that they either 1. Put a different sticker on the the tray to show where batteries were needed or 2. Only put contacts on the board where batteries were needed. It may also be that they started skimping on the full set of contacts at some point to save money and maybe the originals had all contacts installed.

Basically, what I’m getting at is this: you are best to call Garrett and ask for which model number you need for your detector. If you are skilled and Garrett no longer sells them you can probably modify any of the trays to work with your detector provided you know witch slots the batteries need to go in because you can still buy the 9volt battery contacts for PCBs from vendors like Digi-Key.
