Hi Guys

I have been looking at the butterfly coils but other than the coil description and how well it works I can't find any info on how it's made. Is it made in the same way as a DD coil? what are the RX and TX ratios? what would determine the size of the coil?

All the best
Xavier

Never used one.    There just like DD but a bit more round and Tuned the same I would think.

No there's more to it from what I have read, they say that it performs a bit like a DD but also like a coplanar coil so I think that I will try to make one and see what I can learn from it.

They are used in that configuration as directional antennas in HAM radio. Very sensitive for receiving and very precisely directional in transmitting. If you use it as a monocoil for a PI machine, it should be great. Just design it as a flattened figure 8. Wind your coil as usual but 2x the size you want. Take both edges and give the entire thing a half twist making it into a figure 8. Shape it so the pattern is vertical and start a Smith Chart based on empirical measurement. You know the drill by now.

Hello,

Detech makes butterfly coils for different detectors. (Excelerator, SEF, Ultimate).
So because they are commercial there should be a patent explaining how they work.

I found this link :

I think pages 20 or 21 are what you are looking for.

Xavier, I test four of these coils and their detection field is not uniform and they are not as sensitive as the Whites coils and they cant match Minelabs either Out of all the coils I tested whites were the best and Coiltek came up better than all after market coils, I have seen 100s of these SEF/butterfly coils in big boxes waiting to go to the dump because of the High failure rate and the reason they were sent to the dump was because Detech did not want them back for repair due to freight costs,
