Thinking of using a product I discovered while searching for a way to protect my detector from scrapes and abrasion and protect the coil cord. What I found was a product called Camo Form, it's from a company called McNett. Basically it is an ACE bandage like material you apply to just about anything and the nice thing about this product is it is completely temporary yet adheres to itself and leaves no residue on the target material. I have not used it yet but it sounds like the ideal solution to keep the shaft and the control box mar free. It can also be used for cushioning knife handles, shovel handles virtually any tool and it keeps original handles clean and dry. I may use it on my digging tool also. You can also waterproof this material and it is machine washable. I will post images after I complete this project. Th one drawback I have encountered so far is that it is not widely available. Online not a problem but brick and mortar scarce... Beer Chug

Seen that before but not tried it.

Let us know how it works.
