Modern metal detectors specially those under the "motion" search technique suffer from electromagnetic frequency interference. This simple and low cost ferrite core can be found on most electronic appliances as standard on cables running frequency signals. The ring can be purchased on all major electronic stores and helps minimizing the false beeps!

It cuts EMF signals up to some extend. You will hear some less false beeps. Better than nothing!

Is that thing clipped to the search coil cable?

Guys;
That is a ferrite "ring" to stop stuff from traveling on the outside of the coax, into the detector, or what ever you use it on.... it keeps the signal INSIDE the coax, where it belongs.

Of course it works!  Shocked

It actually does two things together. In both cases it absorbs and focuses the electromagnetic fields near it aligning them inside the ferrite material to the alignment of the compacted iron bits. Any inside leakage will be focused inside the ferrite material which then acts as a fuzzy sort of barrier to any other signals coming out. When an outside signal is nearby, it absorbs that building the field up even stronger keeping that external noise from entering the cable. Both actions feed each other. The tubular shape of the ferrite core is what makes it directional towards the wire rather than the outside world. Other ferrite cores shaped like donuts, for example, have other characteristics.

Once again, for the more highly technical on this forum, please accept that I use elementary explanations and language due to the diverse company in which we find ourselves. The advanced technicians and engineers don't need an explanation. The rest of the readers do.

Don't do that "loop around the ferrite core" thing like computer cables do. Just use it straight through and keep it up on the shaft and away from the coil. The coil will see it as a target and worse yet, the ferrite material will absorb a portion of your transmitted pulses. Use a bread twist tie or a bit of tape to keep it from sliding around.

If you have a lot of extras, talk to Christian about putting a few in the store here and you can make yourself a bit of gold for your account while you help others here.
