Go Up Go Down

Hello All
Yes,  I did it.
I took the search head apart.
It has 2 TX coils "8in" concentric and 1 RX coil "4in" concentric.
The 2 TX coils appeared to be laid side by side or the smaller of the 2 TX coils was on top of the larger TX coil.
It went Slinky on me.
The 2 TX coils were not wrapped.
Now, I have 2 coils on the table looking at me.
I have obtained some photos and schematics of this unit but the coil head interface board from an unsoiled search head wasn't hooked up like my Newer Model.
Perhaps a slightly older production model.
Mother Board and keypad and mode settings are an exact match.
I will try to post the 2 photos, 1 Unsoiled and Mine, before I suffered from Curiosity.
If you wish to help me, just ask me all the questions you need.

What model detector is this from?

Try and preserve your coil mess so you can count the turns and perhaps even wind a new coil or repair the old one. The easiest fix is to contact the namufacturer and get a new coil to replace yours.

The old saying, "Curiosity killed the cat" applies here. Good luck.

Yes  Save the coils. Thats on my mind.
I went into this coil section because of the weird Ohm readings.
Both coils were indicating a short between them.
1 set of the coils read about 4 ohms  the other set was 266 ohms.
Nother matter which leg I measured from I would find a readings between the 2 coils and this was with each coil lifted off the circuit board.
I wasn't sure if I had a multi tapped coil or a shorted coil.

I did some research on coil designs and I was amazed by the variety of design configurations.
The operating Freq of this unit is stated at 7.5khz VLF.
I checked the internet and there are coils for sale at this Freq, So I do have a fail safe option.

Question: (a)Wrap each coil separately and stack the smaller coil on top "search head held in operating position" of the larger coil?  Or (b)Wrap both coils together placing the smaller coil on the inner side of the larger coil facing towards the RX coil.

There has to be a bucking coil somewhere, how many wires do you have coming from the RX coil?

Yes..Thats what Im asking   Wheres this Bucking Coil?
In the unsoiled photo it clearly shows a Bucking coil glued down on the left side next to the interface board.

Mine had about 4 turns  "1.5in circular". About 6 to 8 inches of coiled wire, mounted on the upper right side.
Impossible to be used as a Bucking Coil.

There are only 2 Tx coils and 1 Rx coil in my Unit. 6 connecting wires total.

How this Unit got out of the factory is beside me.

Oops. I see you have the coil from an MD3010 which is a Chinese knock off of a Radio Shack detector.

Buy a new one. They're cheap enough.

Not really because the coil has active components in it. Buying an entire detector is your least expensive option. You can get them on eBay for peanuts.
