Hi guys

Well one thing that's always been a problem with building a metal detector has been the coil. PI coils are simple to make but VLF coils are complex. I have been looking on the net and have discussed the concept of coils with GD, I have read countless articles and downloaded more than I care to think about and I have found that there is always something missing. As I once again have a problem with a VLF coil (I have made quite a few) I have come to understand one thing and that is that I don't understand the coil concept well enough to be able to design a coil that will work properly. I have therefore decided to start this thread in order for me to be able to discuss this at length with you and at the same time for others on this forum that have not build a coil or, are about to build a coil, or that had problems building their coil to be able to learn from one another's knowledge, mistakes and hopefully success. I hope that that before long we will all be able to make a coil that will perform as we expect it to (or as close to) because I for one am getting tired of making coils that just don't WORK.

Here are a few issues that I have

1) How do you choose the correct wire gauge?
2) How would you calculate the difference in wire gauge between the TX and RX coil assuming that RX is 1/2 the diameter of TX and twice the number  of turns are used but maintaining the same inductance? (This could only be an estimation but would help a lot)

All the best HH  Detecting
Xavier

Yes I have it and read it about five times. It's one of the best that I have ever found.
