Thanks for this post...I have been wanting to make my own probe for a while, and I enjoy tinkering with electronics...

Unfortunately I have just found out the I.C. is no longer made.
You can still get them though you might need to hunt around a bit.
But here is another link using the TDA 0161 which is still made.

Any good hardware store would sell this unit . Just ask for an electric cable detector .  Cornelius

d.p.swing .  What is a pinpointer anyhow ?   A large coil will detect metal far deeper than a small coil . However it is not sensitive to pick-up small items . So .... you are using a smaller coil to hit the smaller stuff . The pinpointer I ( and Paul A ) am using is in combination with a PI detector . It consists out of a ferrite core with a coil wound around it . You may have to play a little with the amount of windings  but that is all there is to it . This very very small coil will be the best pinpointer you have ever used . The pinpointers for sale now adays are only small detectors . Not very good and not easy to adjust . Better get yourself a PI Metaldetector and wind your own pinpointer . Even anybody without any knowledge of electronics can do this .   Regards  Cornelius
