My experience with there stuff is it has a live expectancy of about 20 hours.

Yep!   they do good platforms for the cheap if you doctor it.

There Clone Honda engines are good too.

I've bought a pile of there stuff that worked good for a while and then Pooped out.

Just not the same as MADE IN USA!

Homie, I buy from them almost exclusively. Drill press, table saw, band saw, reciprocating saw, wire welder, fence post auger, compressor, tons of pneumatic items, belt sander and etc. I could go on for dozens more items, all of which are performing flawlessly. My metal lathe was set up for 240 power. I brought the motor in and they swapped it out for me free of charge to a 110 motor. Same with my milling table.

I really don't believe all the bad luck you seem to have, mate. Seriously.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Maybe Homie has had some bad luck with them. But I have to agree with some of what he states as somethings are good for one or two times then goes caput. Not as good as usa stuff but in a pinch its a god send. Bought some grinders 3 and last about 5 times and uuuggghh out it goes. Homie I was thinking of building one of those generators as was watching you tube of one. but they can be jumped to make a little welder for cheap money and thats a winner.

homefire, My design is direct drive with a universal joint coupling. the motor sits on an angle iron frame with the alternator underneath the two shafts are connected with a piece of  steel braided rubber hose inside a split pipe. a bolt through each shaft holds the universal joint together. Did this back in the 70's used it up into the 90s, with an 1/3 hp 1100 rpm ac motor and found that the The main problem is aligning the two shafts. Any vibration or misalignment will eat up the coupling fast. The shafts have to be aligned end to end centered and in the same line. You know what I mean if you have ever spliced a drive shaft.   I still have the alternator and have a 3.5 B&S vertical shaft. and I've thought about building a charger with them but I don't need it and I have lots of detecting to do. The main advantage of the vertical drive design is it takes up less garage floor space which is
at a premium with me.

G.D. Don't know about harbor freight but the company I worked for back in the 90 bought the chi-com milling machines from a company like Harbor Freight and threw away the milling head and used the base and table to build their production laser welders on. I was told the tables were fine for that application but the lead screws were soft.

Caleb, Any 3.5 will run on propane. all you need is a hose and a regulator. drill a hole in the air breather cover insert a 1/4 inch hose attached to the regulator attached to the tank. Start the engine on gasoline and when it is warmed up increase the speed to the operating speed. At operating speed start adding propane with the regulator. The engine will slow down because the mixture is too rich, keep increasing the propane until the engine just about dies then turn the gasoline off and increase the propane until the engine runs at the speed you want. A 5.4 hp riding mower will burn almost twice as much propane as gasoline to mow your yard. Not a savings but an interesting experiment.

Same here Homie, I buy mostly the odds and ends stuff from harbor freight or stuff I just can't get anywhere else. the rest is all Craftsman , Snapon or Stanley ,etc. a name brand with a lifetime warranty. It's worth the few extra $$ Esp for the big ticket items.

That little Altinator set makes a fine Welder if you just bypass the Diodes and Regulator.

Done it and it COOKS!

Just use Diodes to keep the Battery charges and let the Altinator do the Rest.

Instructions on how to do it are on the First link I posted. Cool
