Go Up Go Down

I have a old garrett 'coin hunter' VLF detector. Has the thick (heavy) pinpoint co-axial coil. I am getting absolutely nothing on it when turning the power dial on. has 6 -9v batterys and the 4 that show #2 on the side of battery holder read excellent. the other two that read #1 on the holder cause the meter to go to 'bad' when I throw test switch on them. all 6 batterys were jusyt bought this last week to test this? They are just 'energizer' as I thought I'd buy duracell once I knew detector worked. Why would one bank on batterys show bad? Do you have to have duracell to run it? I also should mention the battery tray is brand new from garrett as detector came without one off *bay. I think at first all 6 batterys read good first couple test- but not now. You'd think I'd atleast get a beep or hum..or something. I looked at circut board and see nothing wrong. The power dial does have bit of black  below each sodered terminal but think that was from original sodering. Please help as need this going or buy another.  Gene

Those battery trays were (are) notorious for not making good contact. You may have to take your detector apart to clean the contacts where they slide in near the rear. The tiniest bit of corrosion on those pins they slide onto will cause that condition.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Gene ,
I owned a older Garrett "Coin Hunter" and it took 5 (five) 9 volt battery's not 6 . I've seen older Garretts have 4 and 5 batterys but never 6 . So try taking one out to see if your getting the "bad" signal from having to much power entering the circuit . And I'm not a electronic genus but the black might be from it being over heated from over powering it and it now might have a damaged circuit . So if it still fails with 5 , try moving there lactation's too . What I mean is 1-2-3-4-space-5 or 1-2-3-4-5 . And back then try used the same holders for 4 and 5 battery's so look at the bottom of it and see if it shows you what connections bridge to each other .
That's all I can say about this and I hope it's not damaged !                              Happy Trails , Woodstock

Battery Tray has 6 openings but only takes 5 batteries.

2 for Audio and 3 for Detector circuits.

As GD stated they have issues with the Contacts and are a Pain in the Buttocs.

The Pins the Battery Tray plugs in also like to Bend out of place from time to time.

Thanks Homefire for both those verification's ! Both about all the battery's and the battery posts/connections . I haven't owned one of those older Garrett's for sometime and you refreshed my memory about those battery connections bending out of place . Back in the day it happened to me .  Happy Trails , Woodstock
