Making that hip mount for the 1270, but the stock 8" coil has a 3' cable and need a 7' cable. Asked Fisher if they have one or can make one they say it won't work and they don't have any and I asked them if the cable can be lengthened with a splice and they said that wouldn't work to get a new coil w/7' cable. I can't believe it won't work,  they something about the resistance in the wire, I said the 3' and the 7' use the same wire right he said yes, so I said there isn't any problem when I switch between my 8" w/3' cable and my 10.5" with a 7' cable so why cant I make the cable longer, he just said it won't work. So thats what i'm looking for. Know of anything  for the problem? Have 3 extension cables for my Fisher 555-D that I got from them with a Hip mont kit but the ends are diff. Any mods on a fisher 1270?

If the coil has active components inside, it won't work because the coil and box have to be tuned to each other. If they say it can't be done, it probably can't. You're suspicious, probably, because they told you to buy another coil. Remember though, that they can't know you will buy a new one from them or a second hand one. They're probably giving you good advice.

Your only solution is to try it. I doubt that it will do any harm but it may diminish your detector's capability to some degree. Perhaps even in ways you can't see from the first.

All of this begs the question. Why do you need a longer cable?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I need a longer cable cause the 3' is to short for the Hip Mount.
