Hello All, new guy here and found a used Famous Trails Metal Detector for a few dollars.

The manual doesnt cover it not zeroing out. When I turn it on it just goes to ferrous and makes a tone like it has detected something. Even with the coil unplugged.

Im thinking a cold solder.

It has alot of setting and buttons and all variations I have tried has failed to quiet the machine and zero it.

This sure looks like a neat machine to play with.

I can detect no damage and it does power on when the I turn it on.

Any suggestions?

Check all battery connections for firmness and for corrosion. Check all capacitors to be sure they aren't leaking or swelled up. Check all wires from adjustment potentiometers to the electronics boards. Check the coil wires. If you have a meter, ring the coil out (measure it). Mechanical failure is the most likely cause of nearly every problem with a detector and those things I mentioned are all mechanical.

In my experience, cold solder joints normally show up in the early life of an electronic device.

Hey thanks for the info. I have work to do on this detector, it wasnt made real well. When you say ring out coil, what am I looking for? What settings on multimeter? I do suspect a loose wire as the detector tried to zero the other day wothout the tone. Thanks

I don't know what kind of coil you have on that machine because I am not familiar with it but you will have either one or two coils both of which should measure near zero ohms. This will test for continuity only, not for inductance.

Ohms 0.7 what ever that means.

I took it apart and could find nothing wrong. Dont know how to check circuts all I have is a multimeter.

I think it may be the coil. It has a memory. Once I take the batterys out and try to gb it, it takes about 15 seconds then tones out again like its getting too much signal, or not enough.

I didnt pay anything for it. Anybody else want to dink with it before I mess it up.

Really wanted to see a no motion detector in action.

ty for the help golddigger

Your resistance reading means that if there is only one coil inside, that means it's most likely all right. If it's a dual coil inside, it may be that one is open.

Troubleshooting like this is difficult because I can't "peek under the hood" as it were.

The coil unit is sealed I am only finding one coil. Will read up on specs again. I have a pic of the board. I tied to download but it was too big. I will play with it see if I can get it to load.  Thanks

I too think it's some thing simple.

Could just be a connector, Your settings?

Have you turned down the Sence?

Just Yabbering here.

Your right there. The start up and ground balance procedure is the hokey pokey. I guess I should read the manual again. Have a box of old computer connectors, may rig one up for testing. Im getting ready for a hunt on some ruins nearby. I finally narrowed down to where they are supposed to be.

Back on topic, this unit claimed to be a no motion unit. The circut board has allot of stuff going on.

Which of the connectors is your coil connector?
