Sad times for sure.  Our Radio Shack went by the way side long ago.  From Shelves and Shelves of goodie parts to Two Shelves of Bit and part and The rest Made in china crap.  Showing my age here but do you remember just about every small store had a Tube Tester and supply of all Common Tubes (Valves for you in the UK).   Every town had a TV Repair shop.   Who ta ell Repairs a TV any more?  No One.  With all the Custom IC's, and crap you just can't do it.  Hell I avoid working on SMT circuits.    You can't even find a Cool Electronics Magazine any more.   Everything is based on sales.   Most people have NO Idea how a Transistor works never mind a Tube (VALVE).

I've had better sources for many years now but I will visit them when necessary. When they did away with local component sales and try to go into the "Brookstone" or high tech toy store business, they missed the mark and lost lots of customers.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Radio Shack started out as Tandy Electronics and still have some Tandy Leather shops around. Last time I saw one was right next to the Camel's Breath Inn in San Diego.

Yeah, even I who could hardly be accused of being a techie, really loved the OLD Radio Shacks of the 60's and early 70's when there were all these PARTS to sort through and manuals on how you could make really neat things by combining all these individual bits and pieces in a special way.   I loved Tandy's for the same way....both were designed to be strictly hands on and from the ground up....and both served a customer base that ranged from the rawest, youngest, rank amatuer up through literal professionals in the field.   Much more fun then than when you went in for "finished" products.

We have a Radio Shack here.   Al's TV!   They have two shelves of Bits.  Pot's, Some Resistors, the Old Staple of Transistors and weird bits.  They Not longer work on TV's Unless they think they can replace the Power Switch or the like.    I think they still replace VCR Belts some times.  They charge more then you can buy a New one for if you can still find one.    Every thing else they sell is the Chines bits of chit.
