Hi from an older newbie. I'm impressed with your website! Great info.

Now to my Garrett problem. Unit would not work after having it stored for a long period of time. I installed all new batteries . That didn't help. Whupped out my Simpson 270 and measured  the ON/OFF switch for continuity. Does not read any continuity when switching it on and off at any of the 4 switch pins.
So it looks pretty obvious to me but this is the 1st detector i've ever troubleshot. Now where the heck can I find the combination switch/potentiometer foir this boy?
I guess the logical place is Garrett but I thought I'd run it by ya'll 1st.

                                                                                                           Regards,
                                                                                                           Guy

Try Garrett, of course, but you can always bypass the switch on the pot and add a new one somewhere that it won't get bumped to "Off" easily. Wire it in parallel to the switch and you should be fine. Were the battery trays installed when you tested the switch? If not, plug them in and retest the switch. Scratch your head if you want to wonder about this but humor me. Some models used a shorting copper etch on the battery pack to ensure that you never tried to wire in rechargeable batteries.

Then, stop by Radio Shack and pick up a set of jumper leads with alligator clips on both ends and see if you can get it to power up by simulating a closed switch. Jumper across the switch where you think it should be switching but be warned that if you connect the wrong points, you could seriously damage your detector.

One last bit of advice. Garrett used solder coated connectors on the PC board side of the battery connectors. Make sure they are clean and not covered with white corrosion. An eraser will clean them up just fine. Then check the battery box connectors to see if they need cleaning as well. The battery boxes were always the weak link in these guys. Otherwise, they are superb machines, often outperforming modern machines in depth and accuracy. I love mine but it does need looking after now and again.

Well Golddigger, you just proved to me how fortunate I am to have discovered this website. Almost 50 years as an avionics tech taught me to look for the experienced techs if I had a question about an unfamiliar radar sytem or comm radio.
I will do the things you suggested very carefully and see if I can find where the problem is.

                                                                                                       Later,

Thanks homefire, I bought it from a coworker in the 90's and I believe it was the early 80's when it was made. I would like to see your schematic.

I have one like that here.    Needs a coil.

Here is the 5.5Khz schematic.

Do you know if yours is yours 15 or 5.5Khz?     Do  you know?      5.5 had a sticker on the coil.
