Thank you homefire, you've made my day. Now I can try what golddigger suggested.

I don't know which frequency mine is. The coil is like a 10" coil and I didn't see any sticker.

Do you know if anyone has a picture/print of the circuit board showing the location of each component?

                                                                                                Muchos gracias

Thanks for the roadmap of my beast! Now I can do what golddigger suggested and you made possible. Good teamwork. Anyway, my coil does have a sticker(after I actually looked instead of guessed) that says it's a co-planar coil and I noticed on the schematic that they use LM358 op amps which have a flat frequency response up to 10,000 hz so I guess mine is the 5.5khz.
My problem is a bad on-off switch----now to find and put a seperate switch on the beast.

                                                                                                           Thanks again homefire.

If you can get a replacement switch from Garrett, that will be the best option but putting another toggle or slide switch in parallel to the one that failed will work just as good.

I had to replace the mode/tuning switch in the handle on mine. I put a much more durable switch with a substantially larger, flat paddle on it. Made it much easier to control. Long before the days of e-mail, the switch failed on me the day I took it out for its first field test 5,000 miles from home (Germany). In total, I had less than an hour on the machine. I replaced the switch and wrote to Garrett about it. They said the warranty was still in effect and, oh by the way, here's a factory original switch in case I ever want to go back to the original equipment.

I love Garrett. Ring them. See what they have for spare parts.

One last thing. If you replace just the portion of the switch that is the on/off bit, remove the wires from the old one and transfer them to the new switch. That way if it ever shorts out instead of being open, you won't drain your batteries.

I have now modified the on/off to a batwing dpdt switch. Don't look half bad and works great. You have to be careful to position it right though because of the close quarters and it works great. Golddigger, I really do appreciate your help.

I might even put a new paddle switch in the handle. Cool

                                                                                                              Regards,

I'm glad it all worked out for you. Yes, a nice spring loaded paddle switch in the handle is a terrific modification.

Try Garrett!    I think they still have them.

They show up of Fle Bay from time to time.

Hi guysm i also have an ADS with issues after being stored a few years, and an old S4 groundhog with the exact issue too, battery check is good in both #1 and #2 but no sound and no threashold hums at all. Garrett even send me what i suspected was fried ,a U45 transister, it didnt help a thing, same issues on both machines, any thoughts ? battery post have been cleaned and i even tined with fresh solder. By the way that pot that no one no longer has can be replaced with a push pull double thro pot. Garrett says no one makes the old pots anymore.the old one had the 4 post on and off on the bottom for power and potentiometer next to the pcb, a double stack unit. and yes they take the 5.5KHz coils.  groundhog is 15khz.

I have one of these also.  I like the idea posted about modding it to accept a different battery or power supply.  The tray of 9v batteries seems like a bad way to go and mine is getting old and worn.  Does anyone have a pdf of the owners manual they could post up?

Thanks to all the prev posters for their info and insight.
