You're a legend, Homefire. Thanks for posting that. I was just going to rummage around in the old shed to find the coils today.

Ok!   I just openned a 12 inch Deepseek 5.5KHz coil and is as follows:

RX
Pin 1=  Shield

Pin 2=  Black

TX

Pin 3=  Red

Pin 4=  White

There may not anything common exept the shield and Pin Numbers?

OK - I'm confused now - this about the last thing I expected!!

I have only 3 search coils, all with the 4-pin connector. Looking into the connectors, with the index at the top, the 4 pins are at the bottom in a rough semi-circle, numbered from 1 to 4 starting at the left and sweeping anti-clockwise down then back up to the right.

With a meter across the pins on the 3 1/2" deepseeker coil... there is approx 16 ohms between pins 1 and 4, and approx 8 ohms between pins 2 and 3. The shield is connected to pin 1, and all other pin-pin combinations give an open circuit reading.

So... I would have expected one of the circuits to lie between pins 1 and 4, and the other to lie between pins 2 and 3. With little specific metal detector knowledge, but a good deal of electrical knowledge, my best guess was that pins 1 and 4 were the RX circuit (more turns, higher resistance, making use of the shielding) and the TX circuit was on 2 and 3.

Is the pin numbering consistent across all 4-pin models? I would have expected so...

On the 12" coil the pins Ground or Shield was tied to pin 1.

It was followd to pin 2 On what I think is the RX coil.

What coil are you looking at?

I have old GroundHog and ADS / the same except freq.  Four pin?

You Checking with a Ohm Meter?

A cap in line down there would read as a open after it charges.

Does your meter have a test tone? 1000Hz?    Try that if you have one.

As you have coils to open I would call it boxnex!

Just Rewire them the same way.

ARRRGH!;

You guys have been kicking around that poor lil resistor, in the coil, and have not figure out yet what it is there for! Should I tell you when GoldDigger1950 has not? I am sure he knows.

I answered this one, mate. Perhaps the message rolled off the 10 newest list before you saw it.

Yes, I saw it, about 2 o3 days after I wrote that.... you HAVE to keep up with your mail and stop gloating over your detector finds!  Shocked

Seriously, I do NOT know what happens with the postings, they seem to go into subspace, then emerge a few days later... or you can see it, when posted, but no one else can. Also, that black box question, when I looked for the thread, there was only one page showing, and a short while later (hours) there were 3 pages... it certainly causes some confusion, besides, very few posters use quotes and it helps not.

By the way, do you have any jackalopes, flying deer, or sidehill gougers, down under?

Seriously! We have jackalopes, sidehill gougers, flying deer and rare mountain kangaroo.

I can post some evidence, if you like.

We have a Yowie down here.

The posts are probably getting a bit crazy because the SMF is starting to fill up the database. Not to overflowing but to a less than perfect state. It happens.

OK - I finally found time to thoroughly look into the details of the Garrett 4-pin connection... and rather than report the findings here and hijack this thread even more than it is already, I've hijacked a more appropriate topic I posted long ago without any response:

Hello GD.  I just picked up a pretty nice Garrett Groundhog ADS for $85.  It's in good condition and seems to work nicely.  I bought it after seeing this posting thinking I might play around with it.  Guess I'm a sucker for those older detectors.  Also bought a Coinmaster Classic III from the same felllow.  Seems you the "guru" on the ADS.  Thanks for all the informative information!  LX Kid, Tampa, FL

Homefire,
I tried to open up the Schematic you attached, but come up with a 404 screen, showing the file was not attached. Can you emai a copy to me at Pondco at aol dot com? I used to switch the connectors back and forth on the ADS Deepseeker coils, from 5 pin to 4 pin, but not on the Groundhog machine, as the coil for the Groundhog is only for Groundhog 15 Khz machines. But the older ADS coils can be switched to newer ADS machines, by replacing the coil connectors. I have the wiring info stored somewhere in my basement, not sure where it is right now though, but I used to do it.
