Very old hand made by my grandfather

Go Up Go Down

Hello. I am new to the site but glad to be here. I look forward to being part of the community. I do have a direct need which has brought me here. I have an old metel detector that my grandfather made and it isnt working as of now. It is probably about 25 or more years old. He worked for General Electric for over 30 years so I am not sure if he just made it from his own design or from a schematic from someone elses design.
I am pretty sure it is not a very good detector but I have seen it in action before and it would find coins. My grandfather has passed and I was awarded his detector. I would very much like to make it work agian so that I too can make memories with my children. I have pictures of the circuitry and the complete item. Any help would be appreciated.
When I took the cover off of it and removed the corroded 9 volt and one "C" battery i noticed that one of the wires that was connected to the "C" battery was not attached. I can't tell where it was soldered and need help with figuring this out. I also would like to know what "type" of detector it is. I am pretty sure it must be BFO. I understand that I can make one myself but to get this one back in service to actually use with my children would be awesome!

Boy that's a oldy for sure.

My Gress is BFO.

Motorola and TI made Transistors like that at the time.

The Gizmo in the Cardboard looks like a Early Crystal Filter of some type.

Point to Point construction  on Perfboard is old tech for sure.

If you Really wish to fire it up again, I would start by replacing All of the Electrolytic caps.

Fire it up and see!

If the Caps are Dead Meat they will short or be open.

Most Electrolytics will short and go dead Bug.

For sure they have dried out and shorted by now.

That's a Mohegan for Sure.

thanks for the reply.  The thing in the cardboard is the a speaker. If i knew where to hook the negative wire, i would try it but have no idea of where to solder it. any ideas? When I opened it up, the positive from the 9 volt went to the board and the negative went to the switch. On the other side of the switch, the wire ran to the positive of a "c" cell and there was a wire from the negative of the "c" cell that used to be attached somewhere but again, have no idea where to try it to see if it works. I was hoping someone on here would recognize the circuit.
Even it I were to know where to solder the negative wire, you are telling me that the caps are for sure no good?

No Not for sure but they don't do time so well.  (Caps)

What are you talking about hooking up?

It looks good from what I can see.

Yea the speaker magnet looked like a can to me.

Sorry.

Do you have some loose wires?

Sounds like as simple fix if the batteries where corroded and the wiring has gone bad to the batteries. If you have some technical experience, spend some time replacing the wires and add battery holders to the machine instead of soldering to the batteries.
