To Double to size of your coil, you will need to reduce the number of turns by half  keeping the original wire length.

Keep the origninal wire guage.   Great

First of all,do not put half number of turns for new coil,it does not work that way!Only way is measure inductance of the old coil, and then make new, bigger coil, with same inductance.Inductance must be checked with inductance meter .That is only way,by doing so-detector shall work for sure.Every coil, regardless for its size,MUST have same inductance in order to maintain resonance frequency !It is mandatory to keep resonance regardless of coil size or shape!
