I have a suggestion for you, Xavier. Buy some white plastic rods and cut them to 1/3 the depth of the coil. Secure them in at a few locations in the bottom before you lay the coil wire in it and Superglue(tm) the coil wire to the posts. That will elevate the coil itself to a constant depth and put it into the middle of the coil plane rather than at a possible slant. You will have to drill a few flat bottomed holes in your mold for this and then sand off the rod bumps that stick through later.

Hi GD

No can do as I would have to make holes in the silicone and there is a risk that it will leak how ever I could quite easily do that on the next mold. What I do is use a piece of what ever that has a diameter under the one that I will be using like I did with the coil cable then it works just like a seal and no leak so for now I will just have to take the time to place the mold level then pour a thin layer then place the coil on top of that and then fill the rest to the top.

@ jimmyg8138

Thanks for looking and it's only mind over matter that's all there is to it any one can do this if they want to.

All the best
Xavier

I understand. The posts just eliminate one pour and if you glue the coil down, it won't get a bubble and lift. I've had that happen before and the metal from the coil was very close to the surface, which of course becomes the bottom of the coil in use.

Your end result looks terrific, mate. Keep up the good work.

Wowzer McDude that looks gorgeoso and it's purdy too.  I looked into doing vacuum forming but finding parts that fit my buget became problematic so that hasn't gone anywhere.  i'm going to have to study your method what I can cone up with.  Sculpy is a product that is like clay, it works easily and dries slowly at room temp but you can but it in a slow oven and it dries much quicker with very little shrinkage.  I used to have a link to an outfit that sold supplies for mold making, I'm gona have to try and dig it.

Y'all take care out there in this crazy world,
Dennis

A few years ago I came across a place that used wax replicas. They coated them in sand and clay mix. Let it dry, then kiln baked the wax out of it. Then molten metal was poured an and it all was left to air cool. Its an old practice and can give you pretty good results. But I dont know anything about Detector coils, can you use metal for the coil? I have been reading about building a detector. One has the coils in the box. I wonder how all this would work? Too many years building stuff......now I got to go look at how coils are built.

Dennis Vacuum forming can be done with a vacuum cleaner and your oven as the heat source all you need is a plate (board) the shape that you want to form and your just about done.
Now place some sides and a bottom to your board make a hole for the vacuum cleaner pipe so that it will fit snugly. Drill holes 2mm will do all round the former then place the plastic on top of it all. Place in the oven (not to hot) and when the plastic starts to take the shape of the former turn on the vacuum cleaner using a wooden spoon hellp the plastic down to make a seal round the former. Once you have your shape let it cool with the vacuum still on.

Have fun

Yes I will use it for the PI then from this one I will make one for the VLF it's just a question of adding the extra coil in the center of course I will have to make a new mold but by doing it this way half the work if already done.

Regards Xavier

No you can't. There are lots of posts on the forum about coils how to make them what to do and not to do. Read em and weep

I will try to use your method on my project.
I order 2 surf pi boards of silverdog about a week and a half ago.they haven't arrived as yet but I have most of the parts to populate them.so your instructions for the coil just come in at the right time.thanks again.
