Pgill that's a cool idea but I can't see much detail on the coin.  I think that when you get close enough to fill the frame the object is inside the circle of light and are illuminated by the fringe light.  Me thinks you could use five banks of five LED's aimed in at about 40°.  this should plenty of light on the object but the details will get side light which make them stand out much better.

Gramps43, thanks for the comments, there is work needed on the ring, especially in just having bright leds without the .IR and UV leds. The photo does look better at a higher resolution, but I cut it down for quick upload.
