Makes sense. I might look into getting an oscilloscope that plugs into a laptop.

If it were easy everyone would do it, right?

You got that right. Had a 3" analog scope for a few years that I got at a swap meet cheap. Didn't get a good scope (DSO) until I was 67. Imagine that. I use a scope now more than I ever did when I was an electronic technician.  Shocked

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Thank you to Dusty Carl for qualifying, a laptop scope input (they use the mic in) can be built easily and you should be able to download some software. Enthusiasm will get you there.

Thank you Kenny. And Jack, don't worry, just put yourself where the gold is found, and with the right equipment, some brow sweat, and some luck then the gold will find you.

You read my mind Xavier! Thanks!

You're a champ!

Re: Oscilloscopes - I guess something that can handle 10 Mhz is sufficient? I wouldn't know what else I would use it for so I don't know if it is worth getting one that measures multiple channels and very high frequencies.

Yes a good used 20 mhz dual trace would probably cost as much as a 10 mhz one on Ebay.  Plus it can measure input and output signals at the same time for troubleshooting. If you plan on make electronics a part of your life, it is a well worth investment.

Why buy one when you have a simple solution that is great for the beginner and free, take a look at this one

You will have to make two of these test probes if you want to have a dual trace, I think that I posted how I made mine some place (use a stereo input jack) Here is a very simple one but it works well.

Wow, that's so cool!

I am such a beginner, though, that I decided to go for a sure bet and get an oscilloscpe that's already put together. (it's on its way in the mail they've told me)
