You should have tried it before you bought it. Try fresh batteries. Then look at the wires going to the box from the coil.

Next time don't try and save a few dollars. Buy a new machine.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Yes it had new batteries, i know the handling for this type of machines. The problem is: heavy instabil. I can in vlf mode with the ground adjust make in balance. After when it sense a metall go crazy. Must a new balance adjust make. The search oscillator is stabil, i have with oscilloscope the measurement made. By return path from coil i see nothing but clean signal. It stand absolute no balance. The same thing in tr1 or tr2 mode. Somewhere the problem between the phase comparator and other stage. Without schematic can be heavy as hell.
I have experience with the IB type of MD metal detectors , but in these type of machines the balance is came from the coil structure.

Best I can come up with from my collection is the 3003 Monron.  Should be lots of commonalities.

You need to leave a Gap in the Shielding like that or it forms a Transformer and would Draw Power from Tx and Rx Signal.

That is what is called a 4B type Coil.  Outside is Tx coil and Small coil Rx.    Have a read of this document and you will understand more.

Built the 4B back in the 80s on a detector that is still going! The rec coil was if I remember using 28 or 30 ga magnet wire! The shielding was a heavy commercial foil. After i got it settled down on a disk of micarta, gave it the ole gobs of epoxy everywhere treatment.
