Hello, Does anyone have a picture of the solder connections inside a minelab 550 meter. The black wire to the display is disconnected and am unsure where to solder it back to? thanks

In most circuits, the black wire is connected to ground or battery negative. Try it by touching the wire to that when the unit is on and making a sound from a target. Sometimes, the meter is also used for battery test on initial power up so watch what happens when you switch it on.

In this case nothing (polarity) is identified on the logic circuit on the back of the meter panel or the circuit board inside housing. see pic.

I saw the picture. If you have a multimeter, pin 32 of the ICL7106 chip is ground. Use your meter to see where on the board that pin goes. The ICL7106 has 40 pins in total and the little U shaped cut at the right side of your photograph indicates the top of the chip. Pin 1 is the upper left hand pin (top row, right side on your picture). The numbers of pins go counter clockwise from that pin. Pins 1 to 20 are on the left side of the chip. From the bottom of the chip on the right side, they are numbered 21 to 40. Count up from the bottom right side of the chip beginning with 21 to find pin 32. See the attached PDF file for information.

Once you find it, use a magic marker to mark it and either trace the copper on the PC board to the edge where your wire most likely came from or use a meter to find where it goes. Solder your wire there or touch it to the spot as you turn on your machine to see if you have it right.

If none of this makes any sense to you, abandon what you are doing and take it to a technician.

Good luck, Mark. Come back later and tell us if there was smoke and fire, or if it worked.

Hi Mark,
Another tip:

Take a high power magnifying glass and look at all the solder pads.
Sometimes you can see where the remnants of the old wire are soldered.
