The manual doesn't give any help with this issue. The unit was working and now it just makes a popping noise when i power it on like it's a problem with a board or componet on the board. I have 2 other detectors but would like to get this one back up and running. I have the cover off and am going to try to figure it out but was hoping someone else had this issue and could point me in the right direction. Thanks for the quick reply.

The most common failure in any electronics equipment is mechanical failure. Look for broken or loose wires. Look for corrosion (which is mechanical in nature). Check the wires to the coil and to the connector. Wiggle them a little and push them "home" as you do. See if that changes anything.

Before you get started on the inside electronics, take some good photos so you can remember where every wire goes to if you suddenly break one off. Don't laugh. I've done it. Schematics for these things are as scarce as hen's teeth.

Schematic.. lol.. I have looked all over for one of those and yes they must be locked up in minelabs corporate vault !! You are correct about pics too, i am also into rc planes so I know how easy it is to break those thread thin wires. I'm almost sure it's on one of the boards but without a schematic I will have to check each part one at a time... i'm getting old so thats out of the question. Again thanks for the quick responce and hopefully a solution will be found.

A couple of other things to look at are the capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors can go bad and when they do, it is almost always a rapid decline. Look them over well for swelling in any direction.

You can see the way the tops look more like peaks than flat mesas. That's a dead giveaway for a failed electrolytic capacitor. Sometimes they bulge at the edges or sides and can actually leak in some severe cases. One of my technicians working near my put one in backwards once and the thing looked like one of those exploding cigars. The pop gave him temporary deafness for a while and several people may have gone home to change their undies.

Correct on the undies..lol.. I just took the shielding off the boards and it looks like someone has already been there.. looks like they tried to solder a post on a chip with a mig... thinkin about possibly a Garrett AT Pro due to me having an old GTX 350 and it has never given me any problems. I bought this XS-2 off of ebay knowing it had issues, but the guy didn't state it had been worked on.. kinda like shootin for things in the ground.. you never know what you'll find.. Thanks GD i'm sure we'll see a lot of each other on here.. Freebird..

Does the chip have a part number on it that you can read? Some companies sand them off to prevent reverse engineering.

Good mornin GD, it looks like all the chips have all been altered with the part #.. trade secrete..huh... I'm gonna try to get hold of Minelabs tech department today and see if they will sell me a main board. Someone has already tried to fix the chip but looks like they didn't have the rite tools and you know how delicate those little parts are. I looked the boards over pretty good and can't find any blow-outs or swelling but one chip has been soldered on and it burnt the bottom of the board with too much heat and looks like a wad of bubble gum on top connecting two pins. I did read a post on here stating if you can get a ML technition on the phone that they will come closer to helping you more than the receptionest. I'll get back to ya and let you know how that goes.. Freebird

Their tech people are great. They send another member here two boards which were removed for upgrade and he managed to fix is Minelab. On the older machines, they're not so territorial. Good luck.
