hi carl, if i understand right are you trying to wind a coil without a ferrite?, i tried this and had some success winding on fishing rig winders, i also tried winding one on a stripped guitar pickup, your only problem is i dont know if you will find the rig winders where you are.
the one i wound was to fit in 20mm plastic pipe, it was ok, the guitar pickup needs the slugs removing, i replaced the end two with plastic out of a pen, then wound a coil long ways on it, 280uh was its inductance, it fit in the pipe.

Interesting stuff you did there Sinclair. But, no, I am not trying to build a coil without a ferrite core. I would like to know how to wind that pi-wound coil so that i could put it on a ferrite rod for a different project. The reason I  posted that here is everyone that might know is tuned to this thread right now. Sort of a captive audience. Wink

Ok, back to business. I have a question. Does anyone know how to wind a coil like the one in the attachment? They were used back in the old 'radio' days and sometimes used Litz wire for the windings, or some like the one in the pix. Ham operators might recognize them.

Nick, I think you have it  there in the first link. The heart shape cam on the winder in the video produces a diamond shape honeycomb coil, while the circular cam produces the pi-wound coil. Now either to buy one of those winders, or make my own. Thanks mate. Well done.

Cool2010, thank you for trying to help. The first link did show a pi-wound coil, but not how to wind it. The other two were more about making a crystal radio set. Nickel_n found the place that showed how it was wound with a cool video. Thanks anyways.

If he had kept going, it might have had ground balance,  threshold . He has employed ADC algorithms, lookup tables, and all sorts of things to the software to do a simple job which is to determine a sudden frequency change. Overkill at the best. What happened to the addage "KISS" (keep it simple stupid)? Wise

Dusty Carl

Another thing on the pinpointer. Seems to be more stable when the no target frequency is close to 20 Khz. Itrimmed mine with an appropriate capacitor.

AAMOF,  there is ground balance implemented in software, just use the calibrate button ....
this is KISS, isn't it, just point and go, no tricky adjustment. Author fixed all nicely for you..
The adjustment of oscillator frequency in relation to crystal, is also very well and in detail explained by Author on original site..

Here is answer how making coil: AAh, sorry, Nickel had posted the same before, my bad..

Yes, that is correct from a users point of view, but from a programmers point of view, I say no.

What I am referring to is the whistles and bells. Would you need a hammer with automatic laser pointer, gps, and nail holder to hang a picture?

And this is why I like Analog.    You have results or not.   Computers tell you what there programed too...   Not what is.

Depends on how smart the programmer is I guess. However, he has to have quite a few smarts or it won't work at all, much the same as an analog designer would have to have elst he burn the lab down. Grin
