I have an idea to build the Ultimate Metal Detector, that with connecting the metal detector audio signal to a computer and then building a software that analyses the audio signal and converts it to a color code, and by sweeping an area in a systematic way such as to build  a matrix of points of colors and this way we can get a graphical represntation of the matrix and may be can get an approximate shape of the detected objects below the ground. How does this sound? is this a crazy idea or what? Idea

With the new micro laptops at about 1.5 lbs it does seem feasible. Good luck with this.

Actually, I am new to Metal Detecting and I live in a country where metal detectors are not allowed by the law and they get confiscated by customs if I order it. So, I was thinking of building one from scratch and I found your forum and there is a lot to learn from. I have some experience of linking computers to other hardware and developing software for embeded systems. So, I thought that when I build my first metal detector I will try to do some experiments with it by connecting it to a pc.

But does any one know what metal detector type would give variable audio signal depending on the density only?
