looking for any help in getting plans, etc. for a pull behind suitable for a 4wd ATV. I can get through most electronics, mechanical is a breeze. I'd like to actually make one that's for rougher terrain, but suitable on a nice field also. The electrical scymatics are what I need the most. I'm toying with the idea of a large area self propelled one.

Ativan,

Firstly what kind of detector are going to use?

If it's a PI then it's a single coil unit and pretty easy, below is a recipe for a coil (it was calculated as a circular coil but giving it corners shouldn't change things too much.

Inductor, Calculated Data
Note: Wire Size Includes a Single Coating of a Typical Thickness Enamel Insulation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inductance 0.501 mH
DC Resistance 2.68 Ohms
Wire Gauge 20.5 AWG
Wire Diameter 32 mils (1 mil = .001 in)
Coil Length 0.125 in
Coil Inner Diameter 74.75 in
Coil Outer Diameter 74.942 in
Average Turn Diameter 74.8098 in
Wire Length 235.02 feet
Copper Weight 0.67 pounds
Turns 12
Levels 3.07
Maximum Turns Per Level 3.9 (Based on wire diameter)
Nearest British Wire Gauge 22 SWG
Metric Equivalent 0.813 mm, Includes Insulation Thickness.
Current Handling Capability 1.3388 at 700 cm per Amp.

It was calc'd on a 6 meter circuf. circle which can be reformed into a 1m x 2m rectangle. Wind the coil in a piece of 6m inexpensive tubing and then attach that to a sheet of flexable plastic.  I got some "low density poly-E" sheet from US Plastics that is 1/16" thick that would do the trick, they sell it in sheets up to 4 x 8 ft..  You'll have to curl the front lip so it doesn't snap on rocks and such.

I think that might be the ticket for a towed coil.
Dennis

I have access to a couple Lorenze, but I'm still checking around.
That might do the trick, as I am finding out. Now I have a couple buddies from MIT interested. I'll run this by them.
I really appreciate the info and responce. This is a winter project, but up here with the fields waiting for spring, it might be just the right time to go 'exploring'.
When this 'contraption' is up and running, I'll let you know the details and send a few picts.
Again, Thanks so much,
Ativan
