Hello Eugene52
The apparent complexity of some software, you will find as I did, is potential you will come to appreciate. Once you learn the advantages of a good sw there is no looking back. But give yourself time. Some related comments on what you said:

Quote: ?One software I tried a few months ago had 20 different resistor sizes---?. Most sw has libraries of part designs(elec data + shape with pins). The more the better. Hint :Choose what is preferred and save to a ?User? library; easier to find later. It allows you to also design or modify special parts which I found very handy.

Quote: ?All I need is a simple "Through Hole" design not surface mount . Standard board not metric , 2 sided "very simple" . Most good PCB software caters for all cases. They are settings done at start as per your choice, and keep/set as default.

Choose a sw where the schematic and layout can run together. When one is modified the other is outo modified too; plus an outo-router running conjointly. Then consider the board development. A single sided with perhaps some jumpers, is easier than double sided to develop. No problems to align the two sides; less etching later. There are many more benefits; ?copper pour? fills unused board area with copper hatch that saves you having to etch it away, plus a more professional look.

The PCB software you guys recommend is CHEAP! I have been looking for CNC design and program software and it is very expensive. Example: $14,000 for MasterCam, $6,000 for AutoCad, etc. And its hard to find the bootleg stuff that really works.

Thank-You so-far , Great Work from everyone on this Topic !!!!!! Any PCB / Schematic software takes time and practice to Master . Eventually Me and a few others here , will find something pretty cool and post the results here . This new subject here is not just for me , but for all the circuit builders on this Forum .
HH.... Great......Regards.......Eugene

Can you give me a list of the non-freeware programs that you have used, and liked?

@ Mdiede57

Best: Pads by Mentor Graphics. Today it is a benchmark product but expensive. Certainly way above my limit. Early version in DOS is freeware, which I used since '95. Have 2004 evaluation version which I still use.  Tried the 2007 version which is very advanced but this time-expires. too expensive for me.
Take a look at their site; it costs nothing. The later versions (suite; schematic, layout, router and also simulated operation at schematic stage) is an ideal setup.

Eagle: Quite good. used on and off last five years

Both have improved since first used.

Hello mdiede57. In 2005 Altium sent me a Full Version Protel cd in the mail and it was around 700 mb. Did I like it ? NO . It is now discontinued , I wonder why !!!! . I have sprint layout 4.0 and 5.0 full versions , they are ok . But like I said I am just trying to find Full Version "Freeware" that is USER FRIENDLY !!!! I was told they have software today where you draw a schematic make sure it is error free , then with a simple click of the mouse a PCB layout is done for you automatically !!!
Best Regards.........Eugene

why go to expensive pcb soft? they have all same functions and capability.

just pcb making in your own circuit.

its not the software, its the user.

i wonder why...
